Robert Ley

Robert Ley (1890-1945) was a German politician and a prominent figure in the National Socialist Party (NSDAP). His political career peaked in 1933, when he was appointed head of the German Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront, DAF), the state organization that forcibly replaced all trade unions. In this role, Ley supervised the working conditions and leisure time of millions of Germans. His best-known work was the creation of the *Kraft durch Freude* (Strength Through Joy) organization, which managed recreational activities, trips, and low-cost holidays for workers as a tool for propaganda and social control. He was also involved in the Volkswagen project. As the party's *Reichsorganisationsleiter*, he held considerable power. Captured after the end of World War II, he was indicted for war crimes at the Nuremberg trials, but committed suicide in his cell before the trial began.
