Rosalind Ivan

Rosalind Ivan, born Rosalind Muriel Pringle in London (1880–1959), was a British stage and film actress, primarily active in the United States. She is best known for her incisive portrayals of strong-willed female characters, who were often despotic or villainous. She began her career on the London stage before moving to Broadway, where she achieved considerable success. This opened the door to Hollywood, where her talent as a character actress peaked in the 1940s. Among her most memorable roles are the shrewish and domineering wife of Charles Laughton in the film *The Suspect* (1944) and the cruel wife of Edward G. Robinson in Fritz Lang's noir *Scarlet Street* (1945). She also appeared alongside Bette Davis in *The Corn Is Green* (1945). Her skill in embodying these figures earned her the unofficial nickname "Ivan the Terrible" from film critics of the era.
