Rose Lumière

Rose Lumière (1868-1926) was a pioneering figure in early cinema, the sister of the celebrated inventors Auguste and Louis Lumière. Employed at the family company, she was responsible for the film hand-colouring workshop. Her work consisted of meticulously applying colours, frame by frame, to numerous views in the *cinématographe* catalogue, transforming black-and-white images into works that were visually richer and more impactful for audiences of the time. Although she was long overshadowed by her brothers, she is now recognized by film historiography as one of the first colourists and post-production technicians in the history of cinema. Her contribution was essential in defining the aesthetic of a significant part of the Lumière output and in exploring the expressive potential of colour, influencing film colouring practices for decades.
