Royal Dano was a prolific American character actor, known for his gaunt physique and deep, resonant voice, which made him ideal for portraying intense, often eccentric or tormented characters, predominantly in Western films. His career took off with the role of the Tattered Man in John Huston's *The Red Badge of Courage* (1951), with whom he collaborated again in the memorable role of Elijah in *Moby Dick* (1956).
