Salvador Dalí

Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), a Spanish painter, sculptor, and screenwriter, is one of the most emblematic figures of Surrealism. After an initial period influenced by Cubism and Futurism, he joined the Surrealist group in Paris, where he developed his famous "paranoiac-critical method" to explore the unconscious. His most iconic work, *The Persistence of Memory* (1931), with its famous melting clocks, exemplifies his obsession with time and dreams. A multifaceted artist, his prolific career included film collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock, as well as forays into design and fashion. Expelled from the orthodox Surrealist group, his later phase turned toward "Nuclear Mysticism" and a return to classicism. Among the highest honors he received is the title of Marquis of Dalí de Púbol, conferred upon him by King Juan Carlos I of Spain in 1982. His legacy is enshrined in the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, which he conceived as his last great work.
