Sam Appel (1871–1947) was an American actor. A prolific character actor, his career spanned from the silent era into the 1940s, with a successful transition to sound. He became known for his portrayals of characters of various ethnicities, specializing in Mexican and Hispanic roles. Among his most significant works are his collaborations with Douglas Fairbanks in adventure films such as *The Mark of Zorro* (1920), where he played Captain Juan Gonzales, and *The Black Pirate* (1926). He also acted alongside stars such as Greta Garbo in *Torrent* (1926) and appeared in numerous other productions, solidifying his image as a versatile actor. Although he did not receive any major awards, his recognition stems from his consistent on-screen presence as a reliable and recognizable face of the cinema of his era, contributing to the definition of supporting roles across a wide range of genres.
