Sandro Franchina (Palermo, 1939 – Rome, 1997) was an Italian director and documentary filmmaker. The son of sculptor Nino Franchina and grandson of Futurist painter Gino Severini, he grew up in an environment of great artistic ferment. His career began in the early 1960s, influenced by Jean Rouch's *cinéma vérité* and his experience as an assistant to Roberto Rossellini. His most celebrated work is the investigative short film *Morire di lavoro* (1961), a powerful denunciation of workplace deaths that earned him the Lion of St. Mark for Best Documentary at the Venice Film Festival. His body of work, which also includes experimental pieces such as *Collisione* (1963), is distinguished by its strong social and political commitment and by a relentless exploration of cinematic language. Active until his premature death, his films have been rediscovered and re-evaluated in recent years thanks to significant restorations, which have reaffirmed their originality and historical value within the landscape of Italian documentary cinema.
