Shōji Yasui

Shōji Yasui (1935-2014) was a Japanese actor, best known for his collaborations with director Kon Ichikawa. His career is inextricably linked to the role of Private Ishimatsu in the 1956 anti-war classic *The Burmese Harp* (Biruma no tategoto), a performance for which he won the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in the 1985 color remake, also directed by Ichikawa, albeit in a different role. His filmography includes other key works by the director, such as *Fires on the Plain* (Nobi) and *An Actor's Revenge* (Yukinojō Henge). Another of his notable roles was the lead in the film *Conflagration* (Enjō), a film adaptation of Yukio Mishima's novel *The Temple of the Golden Pavilion*. A versatile actor, his long career successfully spanned film, theater, and television.
