Simone Mareuil

Simone Mareuil, stage name of Marie Louise Simone Vacher (Périgueux, August 25, 1903 – Périgueux, October 24, 1954), was a French actress, active primarily during the silent and early sound film eras. Her fame is inextricably linked to her role as the female lead in the surrealist short film *Un Chien Andalou* (1929), directed by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. The image of her eye being sliced by a razor in the film's opening sequence is one of the most famous and iconic in cinema history. She collaborated with Buñuel again on *L'Âge d'Or* (1930), and her filmography also includes other significant works from the period, such as Jean Renoir's *La Petite Marchande d'allumettes* (1928). Her film career ended before the Second World War. Despite a relatively short filmography and a lack of formal accolades, her face remains an indelible and universally recognized icon of 20th-century avant-garde cinema, a symbol of the artistic rupture of the surrealist movement.
