Sophia Lamanova

Nadezhda Lamanova (1861-1941) was a pioneering Russian and Soviet fashion designer whose career spanned two historical eras. Before the Revolution, she reached the pinnacle of success, obtaining the title of "Supplier to the Court of Her Imperial Majesty" and designing sumptuous gowns for Empress Aleksandra Feodorovna and the Russian aristocracy. After 1917, she reinvented herself, embracing the principles of Constructivism and collaborating with artists such as Vera Mukhina to create functional and accessible fashion for the new Soviet woman, using simple materials. Her work extended to theater, where she worked with Konstantin Stanislavsky, and to cinema, creating costumes for masterpieces by Sergei Eisenstein such as "Alexander Nevsky." In 1925, a collection of folklore-inspired dresses, created with Mukhina, earned her the Grand Prix at the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, establishing her as a central figure in the history of 20th-century design.
