Spain Rodriguez
Manuel Rodriguez, known as Spain Rodriguez (1940–2012), was an influential American cartoonist and a key figure in the underground comix movement. Active from the late 1960s, he was known for a powerful and aggressive graphic style, characterized by a heavy use of black and a brutal realism, influenced by his experience with motorcycle clubs. His most famous work is the character Trashman, a post-apocalyptic revolutionary hero. He was one of the main contributors to the landmark anthology *Zap Comix*, alongside Robert Crumb and S. Clay Wilson, defining the aesthetics and themes of alternative comics. His later works include the notable graphic biography *Che: A Graphic Biography*. His work, which explored themes of counterculture, radical politics, and autobiographical events, earned him a prominent place in comics history and awards such as the 1995 Inkpot Award, solidifying his legacy as one of the most authentic and uncompromising voices of his generation.
