Stuart Holmes

Stuart Holmes, born Joseph von Liebchen (Schweinfurt, March 10, 1884 – Los Angeles, December 29, 1971), was a German-born American actor whose prolific career spanned over five decades. He began acting in the silent film era, establishing himself as a familiar face specializing in roles as villains or sophisticated aristocrats. His most significant performances of the period include those in *The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse* (1921) and *The Prisoner of Zenda* (1922). With the advent of sound, Holmes continued his career but was relegated to supporting roles and cameos, often uncredited, in hundreds of films. Despite his lower visibility in his later years, his filmography includes over five hundred titles. He is also remembered for being one of the founding members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the influential union for film actors, contributing significantly to the protection of his colleagues' rights.
