Theo Lingen, born Franz Theodor Schmitz (Hannover, June 10, 1903 – Vienna, November 10, 1978), was a German actor, director, and screenwriter. Considered one of the most celebrated comedians in German-language cinema, he became famous for his characteristic nasal voice and his agitated, nervous mannerisms. He began his career in the theater, also collaborating with Bertolt Brecht, before achieving great popularity in cinema in the 1930s. Appearing in over 200 films, he often played comedic supporting roles, forming a successful artistic partnership with Heinz Rühmann. He was also a prolific director and author. After the Second World War, he successfully continued his work in West Germany and Austria, working in both film and television. For his artistic contributions, he received major awards, including the Deutscher Filmpreis for lifetime achievement and the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
