Toshiya Fujita

Toshiya Fujita (1932–1997) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter, best known for his work with the Nikkatsu studio during the 1970s. His career is inextricably linked to genre cinema, but it was with the diptych starring Meiko Kaji that he achieved international fame: *Lady Snowblood* (1973) and its sequel, *Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance* (1974). These works, which blend historical drama (*jidaigeki*) with elements of action and exploitation, are renowned for their stylized violence and refined visual aesthetics. The first film, in particular, received widespread critical acclaim and is universally recognized as a major source of inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's *Kill Bill* saga. His filmography, which also includes installments in the *Stray Cat Rock* series, is a significant example of Japanese auteur cinema that innovated within the studio system.
