Trevor Howard

**Trevor Howard (1913-1988)** was a British actor, known for his long and distinguished film career. He gained widespread recognition with the role of Dr. Alec Harvey in David Lean's iconic *Brief Encounter* (1945), a performance that defined his image as a reserved yet intensely emotional man.

His versatility allowed him to act in a wide range of genres. Among his most memorable roles are Major Calloway in *The Third Man* (1949), Captain Bligh in *Mutiny on the Bounty* (1962), and Father Hugh Collins in *Ryan's Daughter* (1970), which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Howard was often cast as authoritative characters, frequently tormented by internal conflicts or moral dilemmas: military officers, doctors, lawyers, or figures of power. His acting style was characterized by a subtle intensity, an imposing presence, and an ability to express emotional depth with restrained means. He remains a central figure of classic British cinema.
