He began his artistic career in the 1980s as the leader, vocalist, and guitarist of the rock band KODOMO BAND. However, he gained international recognition primarily as an actor, thanks to his leading role in Shinya Tsukamoto's cyberpunk cult film *Tetsuo: The Iron Man* (1989), a performance that established him as an icon of Japanese independent cinema. He reprised a similar role in the sequel *Tetsuo II: Body Hammer* (1992).
