Umberto Mozzato

Umberto Mozzato (Bologna, 1879 – Turin, 1947) was an Italian actor, director, and screenwriter, and a prominent figure in Italian silent cinema. A leading protagonist from the dawn of the seventh art in Italy, he became one of the first and most celebrated male stars, working for the major production companies of the era, such as Ambrosio Film and Itala Film. His fame is linked to his performances in highly successful epics, notably *The Last Days of Pompeii* (1913) by Eleuterio Rodolfi and his role as Fulvio Axilla in *Cabiria* (1914) by Giovanni Pastrone. Alongside his acting career, Mozzato was also a prolific director and screenwriter, directing dozens of films and often handling the adaptation of literary works. His career underwent a gradual decline with the advent of sound film. He is primarily recognized as one of the pioneers and leading figures of early Italian cinema, helping to define its first narrative and star models.
