
Victor Sen Yung
Victor Sen Yung (San Francisco, October 18, 1915 – North Hollywood, November 1, 1980) was an American actor of Chinese descent, whose career spanned over four decades. He is best known for two iconic roles that made him a familiar face to international audiences. On the big screen, he played Jimmy Chan, the "Number Two Son" in the popular Charlie Chan detective film series, appearing in more than twenty films beginning in 1938. On television, he achieved enormous and lasting popularity as Hop Sing, the devoted Cartwright family cook in the famous western series *Bonanza*, a role he held for fourteen years (1959-1973). His filmography also includes appearances in notable films such as *The Letter* (1940), alongside Bette Davis, and the musical *Flower Drum Song* (1961). Although he did not win any major awards, his contribution is recognized for ensuring a consistent and significant presence for Asian American actors in classic Hollywood cinema and television, leaving a lasting legacy through his memorable characters.
