Vladimir Sokoloff

Vladimir Sokoloff (Moscow, December 26, 1889 – Hollywood, February 15, 1962) was a Russian-American actor. Trained at the Moscow Art Theatre under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski, he left Russia after the Revolution, working in Germany and Austria before emigrating to the United States in 1937. In Hollywood, he established himself as one of the most prolific and respected character actors of his generation, noted for his extraordinary versatility in portraying characters of various nationalities. His long film career includes over one hundred films. Among his most memorable roles are that of painter Paul Cézanne in *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), the loyal guide Anselmo in *For Whom the Bell Tolls* (1943), and the wise old man of the Mexican village in *The Magnificent Seven* (1960), one of his final appearances. Although he did not receive any major awards, his contribution to cinema is recognized by critics for the depth and authenticity he brought to each of his performances. He remained active until his death, also working in television productions.
