Walter Hampden, stage name of Walter Hampden Dougherty (1879-1955), was an American actor, director, and theatrical manager, acclaimed as one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of his generation. His fame is primarily linked to the Broadway stage, where he managed his own company and became celebrated for his monumental performances of Hamlet, a role he played for over a thousand performances, and of Cyrano de Bergerac. Later in life, he successfully turned to film, playing character roles in major motion pictures. Among his most noted performances are his roles as Archdeacon Frollo in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* (1939), the elderly theatrical impresario in *All About Eve* (1950), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and the patriarch Oliver Larrabee in *Sabrina* (1954). His prestigious career was honored in 1948 with a Special Tony Award.
