The transition to sound film cemented his fame, thanks to the creation of an iconic persona: a hard-drinking, boastful misanthrope, characterized by a distinctive nasal drawl and cynical humor. His most celebrated performances include films such as *You're Telling Me!* (1934), his masterpiece *The Bank Dick* (1940), which he also wrote, and *My Little Chickadee* (1940) with Mae West.
