Wim Wenders, born in Düsseldorf in 1945, is a German director, screenwriter, and photographer, and one of the leading figures of the New German Cinema. His career is characterized by an auteur cinema that explores themes of travel, identity, memory, and incommunicability, often through the road movie genre. Among his most celebrated fiction films are *The American Friend* (1977), *The State of Things* (1982), winner of the Golden Lion in Venice, *Paris, Texas* (1984), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and *Wings of Desire* (1987), which earned him the Best Director award, also at Cannes. In recent decades, he has also dedicated himself with great success to documentary filmmaking, earning three Academy Award nominations for *Buena Vista Social Club* (1999), *Pina* (2011), and *The Salt of the Earth* (2014). He has received numerous other lifetime achievement awards, including the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, consolidating his status as a master of contemporary cinema.
