Winston Chao (born Chao Wen-hsuan; 1960) is a Taiwanese actor who achieved international fame. He rose to prominence in 1993 with his stunning debut in Ang Lee's film The Wedding Banquet, which earned him critical acclaim for his portrayal of a gay Taiwanese-American man. He solidified his leading man status with his subsequent collaboration with Lee on Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) and his role in Stanley Kwan's Red Rose White Rose (1994). Known for his elegant and intellectual demeanor, Chao has built a prolific career in both film and television in Taiwan and, notably, mainland China. He became famous for repeatedly portraying the historical figure Sun Yat-sen, particularly in the film The Soong Sisters (1997) and the epic 1911 (2011), demonstrating his versatility in navigating both art-house dramas and large-scale historical productions.
