Yasuko Matsui

Yasuko Matsui is a Japanese architect, born in 1951, who is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in the design of stadiums and large sports facilities. After graduating from Waseda University, she worked for the firm Nikken Sekkei before founding her own practice, Matsui Yasuko Architects, in 2002. Her career is defined by iconic works such as the Saitama Super Arena, renowned for its innovative movable seating system, and the Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium. She has also contributed to the renovation of major arenas, including Koshien Stadium. Her approach focuses on the spectator experience, optimizing visibility, acoustics, and accessibility. For her work, she has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious BCS Prize in Japan and the IOC/IAKS Award, presented by the International Olympic Committee and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities, which attests to her global excellence in the field.
