
Yataro Kurokawa
Yataro Kurokawa, the stage name of Inejirō Matsuda (Yokohama, November 15, 1910 – Tokyo, June 23, 1984), was a Japanese actor celebrated for his roles in *jidaigeki* (period drama) films. His film career took off in the mid-1930s, and he quickly established himself as one of the leading male stars of period cinema. Possessing a classical elegance, he specialized in roles as samurai and swordsmen, becoming an audience favorite. Among his most notable performances is his role in Kenji Mizoguchi's *Genroku Chūshingura* (The 47 Ronin, 1941). In the postwar period, he continued to work extensively with major production companies such as Daiei and Toei, maintaining a strong presence on the big screen and, later, in television, often in supporting roles. For his significant artistic contribution to Japanese cinema, he was awarded prestigious government honors, including the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 1975 and the Order of the Rising Sun in 1982.
