Yūko Genkaku

Yūko Tsushima, the pen name of Satoko Tsushima (1947–2016), was a Japanese writer, essayist, and literary critic, and the daughter of the renowned novelist Osamu Dazai. Her career was deeply marked by autobiographical themes, focusing with sensitivity on the lives of marginalized women, single motherhood, isolation, and complex family dynamics. Among her most important works are *Child of Fortune* (*Chōji*, 1978), an intense exploration of a single mother's experience; *Woman Running in the Mountains* (*Yama o hashiru onna*, 1980); and *Laughing Wolf* (*Warai Ōkami*, 2000), in which she addresses family legacy and historical memory. Her literary work earned her numerous awards, including the prestigious Izumi Kyōka, Noma for New Writers, Yomiuri, and Tanizaki prizes, consolidating her position as one of the most significant and influential voices in contemporary Japanese literature.
