Yvonne Sanson

Yvonne Sanson (Thessaloniki, August 29, 1925 – Bologna, July 23, 2003) was a Greek-born, naturalized Italian actress. She became one of the biggest stars of post-war Italian cinema, her name inextricably linked to the popular melodrama genre, also known as "tearjerkers" (*strappalacrime*). Her fame is primarily tied to her artistic partnership with director Raffaello Matarazzo and actor Amedeo Nazzari, with whom she starred in enormously successful commercial films such as *Catene* (1949), *Tormento* (1950), and *I figli di nessuno* (1951), embodying the virtuous heroine persecuted by fate. She also demonstrated remarkable dramatic skills outside of this genre, winning the Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbon) for Best Actress for her intense performance in Alberto Lattuada's *Il cappotto* (1952). Her career continued with diverse roles in numerous films, including a notable appearance in Bernardo Bertolucci's *Il conformista* (1970), although her image remains primarily associated with the golden age of Italian melodrama.
