Zbigniew Cybulski

Zbigniew Cybulski (1927-1967) was a Polish actor, considered one of the most iconic and influential figures of post-war European cinema. Nicknamed the "Polish James Dean," he was distinguished by his modern and naturalistic acting style, which broke with the theatrical conventions of the time, and by his rebellious image, often accentuated by the dark glasses he also wore off-screen. His international fame is primarily linked to his collaboration with director Andrzej Wajda, particularly for his role as Maciek Chełmicki in the film "Ashes and Diamonds" (1958). This performance established him as a symbol of a disillusioned and restless Polish generation. His other significant works include Wojciech Has's "The Saragossa Manuscript" (1965) and Jerzy Kawalerowicz's "Night Train" (1959). His career was tragically cut short by a fatal accident. In his honor, the Zbigniew Cybulski Award, a prestigious recognition for the best young actors in Polish cinema, has been presented since 1969.
