Alma Reville

Alma Reville (1899-1982) was a British screenwriter and film editor, a crucial though often overshadowed figure in the career of her husband, director Alfred Hitchcock. Beginning her career in the 1920s British film industry as an editor and continuity supervisor, she soon became his most trusted creative collaborator. Her contribution extended from the screenplay to the final edit on nearly all of Hitchcock's films. She co-wrote such seminal films as *The 39 Steps* (1935), *Sabotage* (1936), *Suspicion* (1941), for which she received a nomination from the New York Film Critics Circle, and *Shadow of a Doubt* (1943). Known for her infallible critical eye and attention to narrative detail, she was instrumental to the films' consistency and quality. Although she was rarely credited in proportion to her work, her role was publicly acknowledged by Hitchcock himself who, upon receiving the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1979, dedicated it to her, his creative partner for over fifty years.
