Athol Fugard

Athol Fugard, born in 1932, is a South African playwright, director, and actor, considered one of the most important voices of 20th-century theatre. His career is intrinsically linked to the denunciation of the apartheid system and the exploration of its devastating human and social consequences. Starting in the 1960s, he often worked in collaboration with Black actors such as John Kani and Winston Ntshona, creating powerful works that circumvented government censorship. His most celebrated works include *“Master Harold”…and the Boys*, a strongly autobiographical play, *Sizwe Banzi Is Dead*, and *The Island*. Even after the end of the regime, he continued to write, addressing the complex legacies of South Africa's past. His work has earned him numerous international awards, including a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011 and the prestigious Praemium Imperiale for Theatre, confirming his status as a master of the world stage.
