Audrey Totter

Audrey Totter (Joliet, December 20, 1917 – Los Angeles, December 12, 2013) was an American actress, best known for her roles as a tough and disenchanted woman in the film noirs of the 1940s. After beginning her career in radio, she signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, establishing herself as one of the genre's leading performers. Her most significant works include *Lady in the Lake* (1947), where she played the mysterious Adrienne Fromsett; *The Set-Up* (1949), in which she delivered a more vulnerable performance alongside Robert Ryan; and *Tension* (1949). Her ability to portray cynical yet complex female characters made her a distinctive face of the era. With the decline of film noir, her career shifted predominantly to television, where she appeared in numerous series until the 1980s, including a recurring role in *Medical Center*. Although she did not win any major awards, she is universally recognized by critics as one of the most effective and iconic "dark ladies" in the history of Hollywood cinema.
