Fay Okell Bainter (Los Angeles, December 7, 1893 – Los Angeles, April 16, 1968) was an American actress. She began her career on stage, becoming a celebrated Broadway star in the 1910s and 1920s. She transitioned to film relatively late, in 1934, quickly establishing herself as one of Hollywood's most versatile and reliable character actresses. Her most successful year was 1938, when she became the first performer in history to receive two Oscar nominations in the same year: she was nominated for Best Actress for *White Banners* and won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Belle Massey in *Jezebel*. Her other memorable performances include *Our Town* (1940), *Woman of the Year* (1942), and *The Secret Life of Walter Mitty* (1947). She received a third Oscar nomination, again for Best Supporting Actress, for the film *The Children's Hour* (1961). Her contribution to the film industry is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
