Fidel Castro
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (1926-2016) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician who governed Cuba for almost fifty years. As the leader of the Cuban Revolution, in 1959 he overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, first assuming the office of Prime Minister and later that of President of the Council of State. His government transformed Cuba into a one-party socialist state, promoting initiatives such as a radical agrarian reform, the nationalization of major industries, a widespread literacy campaign, and the establishment of a universal healthcare system. In foreign policy, he was a key figure in the Cold War, aligning the country with the Soviet Union and becoming a prominent figure in the Non-Aligned Movement. After transferring power to his brother Raúl in 2008, he retired from public life. For his political and international role, he received numerous honors, primarily from socialist and allied states, including the Order of Lenin and the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
