Ibolya Csák

Ibolya Csák (Budapest, 6 January 1915 – Budapest, 9 February 2006) was a Hungarian athlete, specializing in the high jump and, secondarily, in the long jump. She reached the peak of her career at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, where she won the gold medal in the high jump with a height of 1.60 metres, achieved after a jump-off against British athletes Dorothy Odam and Elspeth Whyte. With this victory, Csák became the first Hungarian woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Her success continued two years later, when she became European champion in the same event at the 1938 European Championships in Vienna. During her career, she set a personal best of 1.64 m in the high jump and was a nine-time Hungarian national champion across several disciplines. In 1938, she was named Hungarian Sportswoman of the Year. Her competitive career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent cancellation of the 1940 Olympic Games.
