Marceline Loridan-Ivens

Marceline Loridan-Ivens (1928-2018) was a French filmmaker, screenwriter, writer, and Holocaust survivor. Her experience in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, where she was deported as a teenager, profoundly marked her entire artistic output. Her film career was closely linked to her collaboration with her husband, the documentarian Joris Ivens, with whom she co-directed important works such as the monumental documentary series *Comment Yukong déplaça les montagnes* (1976), about China during the Cultural Revolution. As a solo director, she directed the autobiographical film *La Petite Prairie aux bouleaux* (2003), which recounts her return to the extermination camp. Later in life, she achieved widespread critical and public acclaim as a writer, particularly with the memoir *But You Did Not Come Back* (2015), a work in the form of a letter to her father who died in the camps. For her work and her tireless activity as a witness to the Shoah, she received major honors, including her appointment as Commander of the Legion of Honour.
