Marie Jones

Marie Jones, born in Belfast in 1951, is a Northern Irish playwright and actress. She began her career as an actress and in 1983 co-founded the Charabanc Theatre Company, an all-female company. Her international fame is primarily linked to the play *Stones in His Pockets* (1996), a tragicomedy set in a rural area of Ireland during the filming of a Hollywood movie. The play, famous for being performed by just two actors who play 15 different roles, achieved enormous success in London's West End and on Broadway. Her other significant works include *A Night in November* and *Women on the Verge of HRT*. Her work often explores the lives of the working class and Northern Irish social dynamics with humour and pathos. Throughout her career, Jones has received numerous awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2001 for *Stones in His Pockets*. She was also appointed an OBE (Order of the British Empire) and has received honorary doctorates for her contribution to theatre.
