
Martha Scott
Martha Scott (Jamesport, September 22, 1912 – Van Nuys, May 28, 2003) was an American actress and film producer. Her career took off on Broadway in 1938 when she played the role of Emily Webb in the original production of Thornton Wilder's play *Our Town*. She successfully reprised the same character in the 1940 film adaptation, directed by Sam Wood, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance. In the following years, she became an acclaimed character actress, specializing in maternal and authoritative roles. Among her most memorable performances are her roles as Yochabel, the mother of Moses, in Cecil B. DeMille's *The Ten Commandments* (1956), and as Miriam, the protagonist's mother, in William Wyler's *Ben-Hur* (1959). She also acted in films such as *The Desperate Hours* (1955) and *Sayonara* (1957). Also active in television and theater, she co-founded a production company that brought several works to the stage and screen.
