Mikholyev

Yukhym Mykhailiv (1885-1935) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, and art critic, a prominent figure of national modernism and symbolism. Trained at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, he became one of the central figures of Ukrainian artistic life in the 1920s. He was a co-founder of the Association of Revolutionary Art of Ukraine (ARMU) and was actively involved in teaching, book illustration, and theater set design. His painting, influenced by Ukrainian mythology and folklore, is characterized by a Symbolist style rich in allegorical meanings; his most notable works include *The Whirlwind* (Vykhor). His career was tragically cut short in 1934, when he was arrested by Soviet authorities on fabricated charges. Executed in 1935, he is now recognized as one of the most prominent victims of the "Executed Renaissance," the generation of Ukrainian intellectuals persecuted and annihilated during the Stalinist repressions. His work, long suppressed, has since been re-evaluated as a fundamental contribution to the Ukrainian avant-garde.
