Sulo Bärlund

Sulo Vilhelmi Bärlund (15 April 1910 – 13 April 1986) was a Finnish athlete specialising in the shot put. His greatest international success was the silver medal he won at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, where he set his personal best and a new Finnish national record with a throw of 16.12 metres. Two years later, he won another silver medal at the 1938 European Athletics Championships in Paris, confirming his position among the top athletes in the discipline. At the national level, Bärlund dominated his event, winning the Finnish national title seven times between 1934 and 1942. His career, which took place mainly in the 1930s and early 1940s, established him as one of the leading European shot putters of his era, recognised for his consistency and strength. Although he never won gold in major international competitions, his two Olympic and European silver medals represent the most significant achievements of his sporting career.
