Specializing in portraying authoritative and respectable figures such as doctors, judges, and professors, his fame is primarily linked to the role of Dr. Walter Carew, the stern but wise head of the hospital in MGM's popular Dr. Kildare film series (1938-1942), alongside Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore.
