Andrzej Wajda

Andrzej Wajda (Suwałki, 6 March 1926 – Warsaw, 9 October 2016) was a Polish film director, theatre director, and screenwriter, one of the most influential figures in post-war European cinema. A prominent member of the Polish Film School, he achieved international fame with his "War Trilogy," consisting of *A Generation* (1955), *Kanał* (1957), and *Ashes and Diamonds* (1958). His work explored Poland's complex history, often taking a critical stance against the regime. Films such as *Man of Marble* (1977) and its sequel, *Man of Iron* (1981), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, became manifestos for the Solidarność movement. Throughout his long career, he directed significant works such as *Danton* (1983) and the moving *Katyn* (2007), based on his father's tragic story. His highest accolades include an Honorary Academy Award in 2000, the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, in recognition of his indelible contribution to the art of film.
