His career was launched with works such as the spy thriller *Det hemmelighedsfulde X* (1914) and *Hævnens nat* (1916), praised for their innovative use of lighting and editing. His undisputed masterpiece is *Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages* (1922), a unique cinematic essay that blends documentary and fiction to explore the history of witchcraft. The film, bold and visually revolutionary, is considered a milestone in horror and avant-garde cinema. He later worked in Hollywood, directing films for MGM and First National, and also distinguished himself as an actor, most notably in the lead role in Carl Theodor Dreyer's *Mikaël* (1924).
