Claire Denis

Claire Denis, born in Paris in 1946, is a French film director and screenwriter, considered one of the most authoritative and influential voices in contemporary cinema. Her childhood spent in West Africa has deeply influenced her filmography, which explores themes such as post-colonialism, identity, desire, and the vulnerability of the body with an elliptical and sensual style. After working as an assistant director for filmmakers such as Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, she made her directorial debut with *Chocolat* (1988), which was presented at Cannes. Her most acclaimed works include *Beau Travail* (1999), a reinterpretation of Melville's "Billy Budd" and considered her masterpiece, the controversial *Trouble Every Day* (2001), and the science-fiction film *High Life* (2018). Her work is characterized by non-linear narratives, a strong visual impact, often in collaboration with cinematographer Agnès Godard, and soundtracks by Tindersticks. She has received numerous awards, including the Golden Leopard at Locarno for *Nénette et Boni* (1996), the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlin for *Both Sides of the Blade* (2022), and the Grand Prix at Cannes for *Stars at Noon* (2022).
