Claude Lanzmann

Claude Lanzmann (1925-2018) was a French filmmaker, journalist, and writer, a central figure in the documentation and memory of the Shoah. His most celebrated work is the monumental documentary *Shoah* (1985), a film of over nine hours dedicated to the extermination of the Jews of Europe, which redefined the cinematic language of the Holocaust. Made over eleven years, the film is distinguished by its absence of archival footage, relying solely on the direct testimonies of survivors, perpetrators, and eyewitnesses. His filmography explores related themes in works such as *Pourquoi Israël* (1973), *Sobibor, 14 octobre 1943, 16 heures* (2001), and *Le Dernier des injustes* (2013). In addition to his work in cinema, he was the editor of the prestigious journal *Les Temps Modernes*, founded by Jean-Paul Sartre. For his work, he received numerous international accolades, including the Honorary Golden Bear at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival and the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France's highest distinction.
