Edgar G. Ulmer

Edgar G. Ulmer (1904-1972) was an Austrian-American director, set designer, and screenwriter, celebrated for his prolific career in B-movies. Trained in German Expressionism, collaborating with directors such as F.W. Murnau, he moved to Hollywood where he directed the horror film *The Black Cat* (1934) for Universal. Shunned by the major studios, he became a master of low-budget filmmaking, creating notable works with minimal resources. His most famous film is *Detour* (1945), a film noir masterpiece characterized by a fatalistic atmosphere and a spare visual style. His versatile filmography also includes Yiddish-language films, such as *Green Fields* (1937), and science fiction films, including *The Man from Planet X* (1951). Despite the lack of official recognition during his lifetime, Ulmer was rediscovered and celebrated posthumously by critics, particularly by the directors of the French New Wave and American filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, who consider him an example of an auteur capable of expressing a personal vision even within the most restrictive production system.
