Giovanni Pastrone

Giovanni Pastrone, a director, screenwriter, and producer, was a pioneering figure in Italian silent cinema. Active primarily in Turin, he was associated with the production company Itala Film, where he became the artistic director. His international fame is linked to the epic film *Cabiria* (1914), a monumental work that revolutionized cinematic language. For this film, often credited under the pseudonym Piero Fosco, he introduced fundamental technical innovations such as the systematic use of the tracking shot (later known as the "Cabiria movement") and complex artificial lighting, profoundly influencing directors like D.W. Griffith. The film featured the collaboration of Gabriele D'Annunzio for the intertitles and gave rise to the famous character of Maciste, the protagonist of a long and successful series. His other notable works include *Il fuoco* (1915) and *Tigre reale* (1916). Considered one of the fathers of epic cinema, he retired from filmmaking in the 1920s, leaving a fundamental legacy for the history of the seventh art.
