Jacques Rivette

Jacques Rivette (Rouen, 1 March 1928 – Paris, 29 January 2016) was a French film director, screenwriter, and film critic, a central figure of the Nouvelle Vague. He began his career as a critic for *Cahiers du Cinéma* alongside Éric Rohmer, François Truffaut, and Jean-Luc Godard, helping to define the "politique des auteurs" (auteur theory). His cinema is characterized by experimental narratives, long running times, the use of improvisation, and a constant reflection on the creative process and the dialectic between fiction and reality. Among his most significant works are *Paris Belongs to Us* (1961), his debut feature film; the celebrated *Celine and Julie Go Boating* (1974); and *La Belle Noiseuse* (1991). With the latter film, a meticulous study of the relationship between a painter and his model, he won the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival, one of his major international awards. His rigorous and non-conformist approach established him as one of the most influential and radical auteurs of modern cinema.
