Keisuke Kinoshita

Keisuke Kinoshita (1912-1998) was an acclaimed Japanese film director and screenwriter, a central figure of his country's golden age of cinema. Associated with the Shochiku studios for most of his career, he was distinguished by an exceptional stylistic and thematic versatility, ranging from humanist melodrama to social drama and satirical comedy. His extensive filmography includes masterpieces such as the pacifist drama *Twenty-Four Eyes* (1954), which won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and the stylized *The Ballad of Narayama* (1958), inspired by the aesthetics of kabuki theater. He was also a pioneer of color film, directing *Carmen Comes Home* (1951), the first Japanese feature film shot entirely in color. Recognized for his profound humanism and lyricism, he received several Kinema Junpo Awards, the nation's most prestigious film awards, establishing himself as one of the masters of post-war Japanese cinema.
