Kenneth Anger

Kenneth Anger (1927-2023), born Kenneth Wilbur Anglemyer, was an American filmmaker, actor, and writer, a pioneering figure in experimental cinema and counterculture. Active since his adolescence, he gained international notoriety with *Fireworks* (1947), an oneiric and homoerotic short film that led to an obscenity trial from which he was acquitted. His work, often collected in the "Magick Lantern Cycle," explores themes such as occultism (with a strong influence from Aleister Crowley), pagan symbolism, and a critical fascination with American pop culture. His most influential films include *Scorpio Rising* (1963), famous for its revolutionary use of pop music as a diegetic soundtrack, *Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome* (1954), and the troubled *Lucifer Rising* (1972). He is also the author of the controversial book *Hollywood Babylon* (1959), a scandalous collection about the secret vices of the stars. His visual style profoundly influenced filmmakers such as David Lynch and Martin Scorsese, as well as the aesthetics of the music video. For his contribution to independent cinema, he received the Maya Deren Award from the American Film Institute.
