Lewis Milestone (born Lev Milstein, 1895-1980) was an influential American film director of Russian-Ukrainian origin.

Emerging in Hollywood during the silent film era, he won one of the first Academy Awards for Best Comedy Direction for *Two Arabian Knights* (1927). His most celebrated work is *All Quiet on the Western Front* (1930), a raw and powerful anti-war portrayal that earned him his second Academy Award for Best Director and the Best Picture award.

He demonstrated his versatility with the brilliant comedy *The Front Page* (1931), a pioneer of rapid-fire dialogue and the screwball style. Other notable works include the intense adaptation of *Of Mice and Men* (1939) and the original *Ocean's 11* (1960).

Milestone was known for his narrative mastery, attention to psychological realism, and ability to tackle complex social themes, moving effortlessly across different genres.
